Don’t drink the water

Posted by: laughmaster  /  Category: Weird news stories

First I would like to say that this article was posted by Huffpost.  But according to the snoops website, it is false.  Either way I found it pretty funny.  Part of this artical says “avoid drinking Town of Hugo water.”.  Personally I guarantee there are some people that are more hydrated right now then they ever have been in their life.

Residents of a small farming community in eastern Colorado have been warned to avoid drinking the town’s water after THC, the psychoactive agent in marijuana, was found in one of its feeder wells, authorities said on Thursday.

A public works employee in Hugo, a town of about 800 people 90 miles southeast of Denver, detected the chemical and health officials believe it is “marijuana THC-related,” the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook posting.

“At this time, investigators are assessing the situation with state and federal authorities,” the sheriff’s office said. “Bathroom usage is still safe, but until more information is known to us, out of an abundance of caution, avoid drinking Town of Hugo water.”

Susan Kelly, the county’s public health director, said there were no reports of anyone falling ill or otherwise being affected by the tainted water.

Colorado allows both medical and recreational marijuana use. But it was unclear how THC got into the water, as there are no legal marijuana cultivation sites or dispensaries in the area, according to the Colorado Department of Revenue, which regulates the state’s cannabis industry.

Captain Michael Yowell of the sheriff’s office said there was evidence that the well was tampered with, and that the FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigation have joined the probe.

The initial screening was done with a “field testing kit,” Yowell told reporters, and the state health department would conduct more through testing. The level of contamination detected was not specified.

The Lincoln County health department said in an alert that residents should avoid drinking, cooking or bathing with the town’s water for at least 48 hours.

“The contaminated well has been identified and shut down and the lines are being flushed,” the alert said. “Fresh water will be coming into town for the public as soon as possible.”

Peter Perrone, a chemist and owner of the state-licensed cannabis testing facility, Gobi Analytical in suburban Denver, said he was skeptical of the reports.

“It’s virtually impossible to find THC in water in concentrated levels because cannabinoids are not water soluble,” Perrone told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Yowell said he understands that some are questioning how THC could be found in the water, but that does not explain why the tests came up positive for the chemical.

“I wouldn’t be doing my job for the community if we just wrote this off,” he said.

British Airways Flight Reportedly Forced To Land Because Of ‘Smelly Poo’

Posted by: laughmaster  /  Category: Weird news stories

It’s said that he who smelt it dealt it, but in this case everyone smelt it — and it was so bad an airplane was forced to make an emergency landing.

A British Airways flight that was traveling to Dubai on Thursday night instead returned to England when a “smelly poo” in the toilet made continuing to the final destination untenable, according to the Mirror.

The cause of the unplanned landing was revealed by British politician Abhishek Sachdev, the Hertsmere councilor who represents Potters Bar Parkfield in England.

The decision to turn back came just 30 minutes into the 7-hour flight, the Telegraph reports.

“We’re very sorry for the discomfort to our customers,” British Airways said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “We provided them with hotel accommodation and rescheduled the flight to depart the next day.”

The Airline declined to give further details on the incident and the “poo” culprit remains unknown.

Man Arrested After Calling 911 To Report Wife Stole His Cocaine

Posted by: laughmaster  /  Category: Weird news stories

ALLIANCE, Ohio (AP) — Police say a northeast Ohio man called 911 to report that his wife stole his cocaine and was then arrested himself.

The Review newspaper in Alliance reports officers responding to the Wednesday night call discovered the man had a marijuana pipe and was wanted on a warrant for failing to pay hundreds of dollars in costs in an earlier court case.

The man, 39-year-old Robert D. Collins of Alliance, was charged with two misdemeanor counts alleging improper use of the 911 system and possession of drug paraphernalia. Alliance Municipal Court records online didn’t list an attorney for him Friday.

The Repository in nearby Canton reports Collins’ jail records didn’t indicate whether police located the reportedly stolen cocaine or his wife.

Laughmaster’s BLOB (Big Load Of Babble) for 11/26/12

Hello again all.  I really wish I had some great news to share with everyone but I can not think of anything.  I feel like week after week I come on here and have nothing to share and just write a little babble and then post some pictures.  Perhaps that is why I was having a problem writing BLOBs to for a while.  I guess maybe I should get moving and do something great for the site and then I will have something to share.  But until that happens I guess I have no choice but to babble a little and then post some pictures.  But the good thing is that this week there is a theme to the pictures.  I figure I have tons of funny news stories on here, why not some funny TV news screen captures?  I hope you all enjoy.

1 Hour Of TV Could Shorten Your Lifespan: Study

Posted by: laughmaster  /  Category: Weird news stories

Would you just stand up already?

In the latest study to show that sitting is bad for you, British researchers found that for every hour you sit in front of the TV, you cut your life expectancy down by nearly 22 minutes — the same effect as smoking two cigarettes.

And watching TV for six hours a day can cut your life expectancy down by five years, University of Queensland researchers said.

The average American age 15 and older spends about 2.7 hours a day watching TV, according to 2010 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, in 2009, the ratings company Nielsen released figures that showed that Americans spend an average of 4 hours and 49 minutes watching TV a day.

TV-watching is considered sedentary behavior, known to increase the risk of death from heart attack or stroke. The Australian researchers found that engaging in sedentary behavior by watching a lot of TV could have as big of an impact on health as smoking and not exercising.

To come to this conclusion, researchers analyzed the TV-watching habits and risk factors for chronic diseases of 11,000 people ages 25 and older who participated in the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study. Then, they compared that data with the 2008 estimate that Australians 25 and older spend an estimated 9.8 billion hours watching TV, which is linked with 286,000 fewer years of life. The study was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

“While smoking rates are declining, watching TV is not, which has implications at a population level,” study researcher Dr. Lennert Veerman told The Guardian.

Past research also shows that watching too much TV can kill you. A Harvard review published earlier in the year in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that watching two hours of TV a day can bump up the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 20 percent, the risk of heart disease by 15 percent and the risk of early death by 13 percent.

Thais Find Smuggled Methamphetamine Shaped As Art

Drugs in the shape of a rose art hanging

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have arrested an Iranian man who allegedly tried to smuggle more than 50 million baht ($1.6 million) worth of crystal methamphetamine into the country disguised as handicraft art.

The Customs Department said 28-year-old Safi Zadeh Hossein was carrying two plaque-shaped sculptures when he was arrested Tuesday on arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport from Damascus, Syria.

Customs officials demonstrated to reporters Wednesday how the sculptures were pressed and molded from the illegal stimulant.

One 22-pound (10-kilogram) object was the image of a yellow rose, while another 11-pound (5-kilo) piece looked like a framed cameo.

Official Vorapat Jaovisidha says it’s the first time his agency had seen this method.

Flamingoes Tricked With Fake Eggs At Columbus Zoo So Mothers Can Rest

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio zoo is using artificial eggs to fool its mother flamingoes, so they don’t wear themselves out.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has found eggs laid by its female flamingoes are most likely to hatch if they’re put in an incubator.

But the Columbus Dispatch reports that when eggs are taken away, the mothers may keep laying replacements.

Zoo assistant curator Carrie Pratt tells the newspaper it can be taxing to continue to lay eggs. To get the females to stop producing, the zoo gives them fake eggs made of wood or plaster.

The zoo just welcomed its latest incubated chicks – three that were hatched less than a week ago.
